Nothing Gold Can Stay… Except This Mobile

by Sara on November 10, 2011

One of the first ‘real’ poems I remember analyzing and learning about was “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost. We were reading the Outsiders in 7th grade (I think) and like Ponyboy it left an impression on me.

Stay gold Ponyboy... stay gold.

Side note: Umm, The Outsiders Movie? Best cast ever?
From L to R: Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise.

When I hear this poem, it makes me stop and appreciate the fleeting beauty that is all around.  How Life is delicate and short. To be thankful and present. The simple words also conjure images of Fall and changing seasons.

Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I had this poem in mind when I asked my cousin Andrea to make me a special Autumn mobile to decorate with.

My instructions: Leaves; all hues of greens and golds please.

She did all the rest.

And I love it!

It is still making its way across the country to me in California but I could not wait to post about it.

Some of the papers are shimmery and I think it’s going to look fantastic in my dining room or entry.

I promise to post a photo when it’s up and all is decorated.

I can’t wait! Thanks Andrea!

I LOVE the Outsiders. The book, the movie (hello, cute boys!), and of course, Robert Frost’s poem.
