My daughter just made my day, scratch that my month – probably my year.
While working on her 1st grade homework this morning, in which she’s supposed to talk about our Thanksgiving traditions, she said:
“We have turkey, mashed potatoes, and crackers right?…
Oh wait! That’s not until Christmas!”
And that made my heart melt.
Because it confirmed for me that I’ve successfully passed on at least one tradition from my mom, the tradition of Christmas crackers.
My daughter will have no idea how this small statement warmed my soul today, a day that for no particular reason other than it’s Tuesday, I woke up feeling especially distant from my mom’s memory.
And then WHAM! Her spirit came soaring back in the room.
I’m so grateful for traditions and for my children and for the opportunity to share my wonderful mother’s traditions and stories.

It really is the best feeling when you realize they haven’t forgotten something that you wanted to mean so much to them. Love that.
(Also: Is it me, or are the toys/surprises in crackers getting lamer? One more little parachute guy in the New Year’s crackers and I’m protesting. Loudly.)
OMG Kate YES! Thanks for bringing that up. The toys are SOOO lame – one year I found really cool ones from England that were all little tiny musical instruments in it and it had modified Christmas sheet music. When you all played your part it came together as a Christmas carol – we nearly killed ourselves laughing so hard, or maybe it was the wine.
Thank you for the visual. I was picturing saltines. And then I was going to tell you to serve some challah.
Ha. I’m with Ilana, I was picturing some kind of crunchy salty snack. CRACKERS. Just like Harry Potter gets for Christmas.
Did I just out myself as a nerd? No? I was outed long ago? Oh, ok.
Also I just realized the previous 2 comments are from my Twitter BFFs, Kate and Ilana. (Yes, I just declared you my BFFs. No, you do not get a say in the matter. I didn’t say I was YOUR Twitter BFF. Just leave me with my delusion, OK?)
I’ll be deluded along with ya! We should be so lucky right?
