Know Your Risk

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and while I’m seriously contemplating adding a pink streak to my hair for the month I’m also hoping everyone will take five minutes to ask themselves this question:

Are you aware of your risk for breast cancer?

If you answer YES to one or more of these questions, then you may be at a higher risk for breast cancer than the general population. If you are, then you should discuss a prevention and monitoring plan with your doctor.

  • Do you have a family or personal history of breast cancer (first degree relatives)?
  • Are you over the age off 55?
  • Do you carrying a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, or another breast cancer predisposing gene.
  • Did you have early onset of menstruation or late onset of menopause.
  • Did you have children later in life? (>age 30? or never had children?)
  • Do you have denser breast tissue?
  • Have you ever had a breast biopsy?

Be your own health care advocate and make a plan with your doctor for monitoring and prevention. I do.

Go get squished!

Both my mother and my mother-in-law died of breast cancer, so I thank you for taking time in your blog to help raise awareness about this terrible disease.

I’m so sorry for your losses. Sometimes it feels like a small thing to remind people to know their risk – but if just ONE person does it and becomes aware then maybe, hopefully, they will take steps for prevention.
HUGS to you Regina.

As more and more women gets afflicted with these, I guess its pretty much time for men to also not only be aware of it but rather be sensitive about it. Think about it. Life is too short to spend with your mom, your wife, your daughter and even a friend.

AND Steven I’d add that men too need to be diligent and knowing their risk.
You don’t need to have MOOBS to get breast cancer guys. Find out YOUR risk.
Thanks Steven.
