On Monday, Google announced the winners of their Inaugural Science Fair and the ladies took top honors. These winners are all under 18 and they seriously BLEW me away. Here they are by age category:
- Lauren Hodge in the 13-14 age group. Lauren studied the effect of different marinades on the level of potentially harmful carcinogens in grilled chicken. Here’s a link to her project.
- Naomi Shah in the 15-16 age group. Naomi endeavored to prove that making changes to indoor environments that improve indoor air quality can reduce people’s reliance on asthma medications. Here’s a link to her project.
- Shree Bose in the 17-18 age group. Shree discovered a way to improve ovarian cancer treatment for patients when they have built up a resistance to certain chemotherapy drugs. Here’s a link to her project.
The Grand Prize winner was Shree Bose who got to take home a “$50,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galápagos Islands with a National Geographic Explorer and an internship at CERN. Naomi and Lauren each received $25,000 scholarships and internships at Google and LEGO. All three were awarded lifetime digital subscriptions to Scientific American. ”
I watched all three 3 video submissions for each one and was seriously blown away. These are some really smart cookies!
Here’s a link to Shree’s powerpoint presentation – if you can explain it to me I’d really appreciate it:
I’m totally in awe and proud of these girls.
My takeaway from all this: 1) don’t marinade your chicken especially NOT in soy sauce, 2) buy an air filter and 3) find out what Shree’s parents fed her as a kid!
Way to go!
