Royal memories with a royal family

Feb 2, 2011 by

Ok – my total inner geek is going to show up now.  I’m totally stoked that there is going to be a royal wedding in April! Kate & Wills are getting hitched on Friday, April 29th at 11:00 AM. And yes, even though it will only be 3AM here in California I fully plan on getting up and watching it LIVE.

Prince William and Catherine Middleton

Maybe it has to do with my being Canadian or the fact that my father is British – either way I grew up in awe of the Royals. They were a part of our lives.I will fully admit that along with my Ricky Schroeder poster from Teen Beat I had posters of Prince Wills in my room. (His cute little face in those little red suspenders with his doting mother looking on). I ate it up and thought maybe one day I could even marry him. It even went so far in our family as my mother joked that Prince Phillip (Charles’s dad) was really my father’s dad because of their resemblance to one another.  When my parents came back after leaving my brother and I for two weeks with Granny in England my long blonde hair had been chopped to look like Princess Diana’s, although it was a far cry from her iconic coiffure.  Needless to say it was not a good look for me and took forever to grow out!

When I was 6, I vividly remember being woken up to watch Diana Spencer marry Prince Charles in the most lavish and fairytale wedding. It was pitch black outside and we walked down the street to our neighbors house to watch and eat crumpets and the grownups had champagne. I also tearfully remember at 24 watching Diana’s funeral with my mother and our other Canadian friends.

The image of the boys walking solemnly behind her casket haunted me along with the envelope addressed to “Mummy” resting on top.

The Royals have been in my life since day one. And I’m excited that something positive is coming their way. I hope to share this special occasion with my kids. I don’t think my son will care too much and I’m not too sure my daughter will have the attention span it requires, especially at 3am. So I’ll be planning on sharing this event with whoever in my life happens to be online and watching it too. You can be sure that I will be having crumpets, tea and oh yea, champagne!

What will you do to celebrate the royal wedding?
