Giveaway: These Shoes Were Made For Walking

by Sara on July 11, 2011

For Periwinkle Papillon’s third giveaway we have something really special and tied in with a cause near and dear to my heart. Read on to see what it is… I’ll give you a hint: it’s from New Balance!

"Susan's Team" Victoria was there with me in 2000, walking in honor of my mom 3 months after she passed away.

As you’ve probably heard me say a few thousand times already, I’m walking in this year’s Susan G. Komen 3-Day in San Francisco. My team, Maidens for Mammograms and Margaritas will be completing our second walk in less than 9 weeks!

Walking with me this year, I am so excited to have my mother-in-law, Susan AND my sister-in-law Victoria. They are both incredibly special to me and I’m so honored that they are doing this with me.

They both knew my mother well (our families met when Alex and I were 15) and have been through all of my life’s ups and downs with me. They are not only family, they are two of my BEST friends.  I’m one of the very lucky people who has to fall quiet when anyone starts complaining about their in-laws because mine are, well – they are awesome.

My MIL Susan and my cousin Audrey Maidens in Mammograms & Margaritas

So they’ve committed to walking with me and I’m really touched and  super grateful.

When I started blogging a little awhile ago, I didn’t think anyone would read these posts other than my friend Kristina who happened to be on the phone with me when I hit publish for the first time. So you can imagine my shock when I got an email from Dana at New Balance offering my team some of their 860 special edition Susan G. Komen ‘Lace Up For The Cure’ 3-day shoes!

And the best part…

They also kindly offered a pair for one very lucky Periwinkle Papillon reader!

Here’s what they look like:

[box] These shoes were made for walkin’. As the official shoe of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, the New Balance Lace Up for the Cure 860 is sure to get a lot of attention. Combining the flexibility and feel of a running shoe with the gait support and cushioning of a walking shoe, the 860 provides comfort from start to finish. MSRP: $89.99

You can check out more New Balance Lace Up for the Cure information and apparel here: http://www.newbalance.com/komen. This year, New Balance will contribute 5% of the suggested retail price of sales from the Lace Up for the Cure Collection with a guaranteed minimum donation of $500,000 to Susan G. I do have to say my favorite song to run/walk to is “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas. It all started when we were together ready to start our first 3-day walk. Right before we were herded out after the opening ceremonies onto the course, this song blasted out to pump us up! You and I both had the biggest smiles on our faces, and we were ready to take on the world! I pulled the same song out half way through my marathon with my sister-in-law, urging us to keep running. It breaks my heart that I can’t be there with you, Susan, and Vic to do the walk this year, but know I will be with you in spirit every mile of the way! Think of me with every Uncrustable you eat!

Ilana July 11, 2011 at 9:58 pm

My favorite song to run/walk to is an episode of Fringe. Wait. That’s not a song is it? I’ve been watching TV on my iPod/iPhone while on the treadmill for the past ten years. Shows are 45 minutes- it’s perfect!

Ilana July 11, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Just tweeted about the giveaway. Plus, I fully realize you cannot watch an episode of television while you walk for the cure. SO, I will also submit All MY Days by Alexi Murdoch for walking reflection and Tambourine by Eve to get your ass moving.

MommaKiss July 12, 2011 at 6:38 am

Hey – I am her from Ilana’s tweet. First, please do not enter me for the giveaway, I have the same shoes from Dana. I’m doing the Boston 3 Day which is like NEXT WEEKEND! Oof! Congrats to you and good luck in your steps.

Kitty July 18, 2011 at 11:04 pm

Can’t wait for Aug 5!

This is my 5th Chicago 3 Day. If you were there in 2K7 I was the guy who won the first 3 Day Rockstar show. I did Delilah on Friday and Unchained Melody on Saturday.

It was an honor and privilege to sing for the ladies, and an honor to walk with you all.

See you in 15 days, and 22 hours.

Larry B.

OH, and my fav song to walk to? STOMP by Kirk Franklin. Try it!

Theresa S. July 20, 2011 at 7:01 am

I love love love when the 3-Day used to open up to “It’s a Beautiful Day”. Even when I hear it on the radio now, it makes me think automatically to the Opening steps of the 3-Day.

Mary Anne Nowakowski July 20, 2011 at 8:19 am

Killers song, All These Things That I Have Done.

My favorite song to walk to is definitely “I Gotta Feeling” by The Blacked Peas. It gets your tired legs moving and gets you in a good mood!

Patty Hopkins July 20, 2011 at 10:33 am

Hi Sara,

Walking my 3rd & 4th events (TC & SD) this year…they mean even more since I am now a cancer survivor having had my thyroid removed in May. I wish you the best of luck this walking season. My favorite walking song is “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge.

Michelle Walker July 20, 2011 at 11:18 am

The song that gets and keeps me going, is so fitting for this event as this is my very first 3-Day is…………(drumroll please!….) MC Hammer – Too Legit To Quit!

Sharon Kay Horvath July 20, 2011 at 12:11 pm

My favorite song to walk to: I Am Woman. I think that says it all and keeps me motivated to take another step, and another step……

Renee Kelly July 20, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Sacha July 20, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Suzie July 20, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Hi! I love “Proud” by Heather Small – it used to be the Biggest Loser themee song!

Suzie July 20, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Karen Casper July 20, 2011 at 5:18 pm

my favorite song to walk to is “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, But I just love music while walking, unless with my boyfriend and we talk, LOL

Bernadette Massey July 20, 2011 at 7:54 pm

I love “I Gotta Feeling” also, because of hearing it on my first walk 2 years ago. Even when I hear it now, I smile and my feet want to move. I also love any of Trace Adkins’ upbeat songs, especially “Hot Mama” and “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”. I liked your Facebook page and love your pretty butterflies!

Michelle Hawthorne July 21, 2011 at 4:55 am

I love walking to anything upbeat and don’t favor one song over another. I walk in honor of my friend, Heather Gardner Starcher, who passed away at the young age of 26 in 2002. Good luck to all the teams out there! This is my first 3-day and I am really looking forward to it.

Jennifer Collette July 21, 2011 at 10:23 am

Go Cut Creator Go by LL Cool J! I know, old school, but still does it for me after almost 20 years! Boston tomorrow – I’ll have to be careful of the heat rash I usually get, but can’t wait to be out there with my 3 Day Family.

Brenda Nyberg July 21, 2011 at 10:57 am

I like anything country training for the 3 day in San Diego Search for our page. Web of Friends!!

Karen July 21, 2011 at 10:58 am

Just liked you on FB….

Maria July 21, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I was going to say “these boots are made for walking” lol but really I love walking to the song Solo by Iyaz. It reminds me that even though I am not in a walking group I will not be walking solo as I’m sure all those that I have lost to cancer will be walking with me in spirit.

Cindy (Missing Mick) July 22, 2011 at 5:41 am

My new favorite song that I walk to and am inspired by is by Rascal Flats’ “I Won’t Let Go” – - – I have a long list of tunes we’ve played while walking the past eight years but the response from Cleveland walkers to Sister Sledge’s song “We Are Family” made me cry. Please keep Boston walkers in your thoughts this weekend as they walk in this heat. We walk in Cleveland next weekend—-YAY!!! You gotta BELIEVE we are making a difference!!

Pam V July 22, 2011 at 5:42 am

what a great site! And, as I’m making up a playlist for a pit stop, the song suggestions are greatly appreciated! I personally like Shania Twain’s music – Up or Man, I Feel Like a Woman! I like a lot of Jimmy Buffet also – Volcano is always fun and reminds me of the awesome Parrotheads that show up in Seattle to cheer on the walkers and serve their famous “Gatoritas” (gatorade slushies).

Kris G July 22, 2011 at 7:44 am

I love walking to “Suddenly I see” by K.T. Tunstall

Jen July 22, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I did the Philly walk, so Eye of the Tiger by Survivor was a fav. Anything Black Eyed Peas will put some spring in my step, and at low points I will Survive is my song.

For all I may sing out loud… warning to the great ones doing the Philly walk in 2011 (those who did it in 2010 did not complain since I had the speakers and they appreciated it.)

Chris McNicholas July 26, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Can’t wait to hear you in Philly in October!

Joyce Nygaard July 23, 2011 at 10:52 am

The Cup of Life by Ricky Martin.

My favoriite this time is “I Run for Life” by Melissa Ethridge—of course when I sing it, I’m replacing “RUN” for “WALK” :-)

Happy Training to all 3 Dayers!!!

Suzy July 25, 2011 at 7:58 am

I love the Black Eyed Peas, and “One Tribe” in particular for walking … great beat and a great message make for a great walk! Thanks for posting … we’re building our music list for the Michigan walk (Aug. 12, 13, 14) and these comments will give us more to put on!

Chris McNicholas July 26, 2011 at 7:39 pm

My favorite training song is Born to Run…by the Boss… I think about nothing but walking, walking, and more walking to I can Run this disease right out of every town.
Thanks for doing this giveaway!

Dawn Worde July 26, 2011 at 8:42 pm

I am celebrating my 5th event this year and have used the same shoes for all 5 (lots of miles)! I really like the song You Get What You Give by The New Radicals. I love the upbeat music and the inspirational message. I think the song captures the essence of why we do what we do.

btw, I liked you on Facebook!

@LastMinuteMandy July 27, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Good luck on your event! I’m about to do my fourth walk here in DC…and I always LOVE walking to all things Black Eyed Peas and Florence and the Machine! Yeah, I kinda run the gambit!

Ms. Wasteland July 27, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I like to walk to show tunes. Sometimes I even astound my neighbors with jazz hands whilst bopping around.

Jeffrey Hollett July 28, 2011 at 11:33 am

Not sure if this will count toward an entry or if it’ll even fit but here it goes…

“3 Day Road”
The 3 Day starts
While the youth corps is cheerin’
Like a vision we walked out
Across the state
As the volunteers waved
Hey nobody’s walking this
all alone Yah it’s me
and I want you to come along
Just look around my friends
Cause No one will face this walk alone

Don’t look down and cry
Darling you know just what we’re here for
So your scared and your thinking
That maybe we ain’t that strong any more
Well show a little faith
There’s magic here tonight
We’re all winners
And hey we’re alright
Oh and that’s a sight to see
Here tonight

Beneath you covers and study your pain
Make ribbons for your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Share your stories praying the same
For a savior to rise from these feats

No I’m no hero that’s misunderstood
The only redemption I can offer
Is a real chance to do some good
With a chance to find a cure somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except lift up our voices
And let the world know that we’re here
While the streets are busting open
Our heroes can take us anywhere
We got one more chance to make it real
To trade in these miles on our heels

Don’t look back
The pit crews waitin’ there along the path
And it’s whoa oh come take my hand
We’re walkin’ out tomorrow
to lend a helpin’ hand
Whoa o oh oh 3 Day Road oh 3 Day Road
It’s lying out there like a killer in the sun
But we all believe
That this battle it can be won

Whoa oh oh oh 3 Day Road
Stand proud take hold
3 Day Road

Well I got these two feet
And I learned how to make em’ talk
And my teams out back
If you ready to take that loooong walk
From our pink tents
To where we’ll all meet
The roads open but the walk it ain’t free
Now I know your hurtin’
But our spirits won’t be broken
So walk now here with me
And let your stories all be spoken

I see the ghosts in your eyes
Of all the heroes that have gone away
They haunt this awesome camp site
In the hearts and faces
Of friends I just met today
You’ll hear their names echoing in the streets
Their celebration lies in town by the sea
So in the quiet cool before dawn
Rise From your tents
It’s time to move on
Cause when we get to the closing
They’re not gone

On the wind…
They carry us in
It’s time for us to walk
And they’ll be right here with us
till the end!

Words edited by Jeff Hollett, Captain of Team Baghdad Breast Defense sung at slow tempo to the tune of “Thunder Road”
“This is for You, For Kim and For All of Them!”

My favorite song to walk/run to it “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. For me it’s the ultimate woman empowerment song. Whether it be to boost your mood after a bad breakup like the song, or to subliminally (or not so subliminally) tell whatever it is your battling to take a hike… it never fails. I am proud to be walking in memory of a woman I never met. My mother-in-law, Linda Ford, passed away years before I even met my husband, but I know what an incredible person she was because of how amazing my husband is. I’d give anything to have one moment to tell her thank you for raising such an remarkable man, and sending him to me. Because I will never get that chance, I will walk in her name every year until they find a cure or I can’t.

Kathleen August 14, 2011 at 3:46 am

Yesterday on our 17 mile training walk, my teammate and I sang the greatest hits of The Supremes. It was a fabulous energy boost.

Well this is my first 3-day for the cure walk and I am so excited to be walking in San Francisco.
I walk in this beautiful park where I live in Chico so I don’t usually listen to music unless I am doing a long walk alone. I usually have my son in his jogger (31/2) to keep me company.
I would have to say Lady Gaga is very motivating while I’m walking.
3 weeks and counting.
Going to facebook now.
