Me and Gwyneth, Cleansing Together

Apr 25, 2011 by Sara

At this point it’s probably a little too late to do anything about the vast amounts of Cadbury Easter Eggs I’ve consumed in the last 24 hours.

The good news is I have one more week to indulge before I attempt to do another Clean cleanse. Yes, I’m going to try it again.  The day AFTER my birthday I will start anew. My second attempt at completing the Clean Cleanse.

Lord help me.

Last time, I made it to 14 out of 21 days. It was a loooong 14 days and on Day 2 I nearly called an ambulance because I felt so sick from caffeine withdrawal. I crawled into bed at 6:30 PM and prayed that I would fall asleep. It was brutal. By Day 4 I was feeling great and into the swing of things. There were great resources online and I had fun trying out the “clean” recipes.

The Clean Cleanse is by Dr. Alejander Junger and has been endorsed by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow. (Love her or hate her, you gotta admit the girl looks ridiculously fabulous ALL the time!) It basically involves a liquid breakfast (smoothie) a solid lunch and a liquid dinner. Lots of water throughout the day, an organic diet and no dairy, red meat, wheat, alcohol to name a few of the exclusions.

It’s not as bad as it sounds once you come out of the initial stages of detox. For me I found I could have satisfying meals because I could still cook with olive oil and not sacrifice flavor. It’s an interesting experiment and it’s really fascinating to see how your body responds.

So why did I only make it to Day 14? Well, my husband and I had a weekend on the books for some time away together sans kiddos. Three days alone, where technically we did not have to cook and we could enjoy grown-up restaurants together. It was too hard to pass that up.

So when we arrived on Friday evening and I had a 90 minute massage.

YES, that’s right. Ninety minutes…of pure heaven…   When I met my husband at the bar, I was more than ready to enjoy someone else’s cooking and that martini.

So I did. And I don’t regret going off the cleanse.

After 14 days of cleansing, I was a cheap date.

But I’m ready to try again.

My results last time were an 8 pound weight loss and my skin cleared right up. I never got a huge surge of energy like I’ve heard about but I was sleeping way better.

Anyway, I’m excited to try it again and to finish it.

If anyone wants to sign-up with me, May 1st is the day. I should be plenty ready to cleanse by then after all the royal wedding festivities and my birthday. This will also mark the kickoff for training walks for my Maidens for Mammograms and Margaritas team in preparation for the 3 Day. But I guess we won’t be having a margarita until AFTER I finish the cleanse. HA!

You can read about the Clean Cleanse here and also on Gwyneth’s blog, GOOP, yes this is THE cleanse GP does too. (Don’t hate me for this one please!).

Girl, you had me until you said no alcohol. :)

  2. I am debating. Seriously debating. But I’m going to Bloggy Boot Camp on the 6th and there will be cocktails involved. Can we make a one day exception?

DO IT!!! You can take 1 day off, I won’t tell anyone. i swear. your secret is safe with me. It is a slippery slope though. :)

  3. I saw Gwenny where I get my hair cut, she looks like a walking cleanse.

    • Sara

Oh you’re famous! Did she ask about me?

      • she totally asked about you. …here’s how our convo went

        Me: “Hi Gwenny”

Gwenny: “Don’t call me Gwenny, and tell your friend Sara she’s a slacker”

Me: “Ok, bye, you’re too skinny and boring for me… SEE YA suckaaa”

I am 2 days ahead of you… But I am on the stomach flu diet of saltines and gatorade. :-)

I’m already training with you since I’m registered for the Seattle 3 day….might as well check this cleanse out too! Misery loves company, right?

  6. Yikes – good luck with that.

Would love to try this one. Last year I did a nutritional bootcamp for 21 days – all cooking though (no liquid meals). But, it’s just so hard to find 21 days without plans that involve eating and alcohol – including the days you’ve picked (Katie’s first communion party and a wedding) – boo! Good luck!

    • Sara

OK I’ll give you the first communion and wedding as a serious impediment to success. I will do it again, probably after Nov/Dec holidays so you can start planning now.

  8. Then you cannot be friends with GP. ;) jk

Do NOT cleanse while nursing. Just sayin’.

    • Sara

Glad you were just kidding there. BTW GP agrees with you, nobody is going to cleanse while nursing.
