I’m so sorry you had to have that conversation but I think you handled it beautifully. It’s helpful for our kids to see us cry. Here’s a direct quote from Dr. B:

It is okay to grieve in front of your children. Sometimes adults think it is important to be strong in front of children. But displaying appropriate degrees of emotion in front of children models for them that it is okay to cry when you experience emotional pain. Showing appropriate emotions in response to sad events such as the loss of someone special, helps children learn that it is okay to cry and be open about their feelings when they experience sadness.

Much love to you, Ilana

We went through this a bit last year when Adam’s aunt passed away from ovarian cancer, and I still shy away from the idea of overexplaining what cancer cells are and how they spread and…everything else. It’s almost too much for me to take in, never mind a young child.

You have some fantastic, fantastic kids.

I’m sure it won’t be the last conversation you have about it with either Anna or Jack, so think of it as getting the first one under your belt and you’ll be more prepared next time.
Honestly, I’m a little worried when the questions from Audrey start coming. While she sees my scars she doesn’t know what they are from.
This post has now got me revisiting an idea I had earlier this year! THANK YOU!!

I hope we can all work towards finding a cure – even if its pennies at a time.

It makes me wonder why some things have to happen. We can only pray that one day all be well. That was really touching.

I think kids understand much more than we sometimes give them credit for. Crying in front of your child shows your own empathy. That’ can’t be wrong. And if your child is loved, and obviously she is, she’ll know she didn’t cause you to cry, but that the death of your mother so shook you. I can imagine how difficult that was for you. The thought of my mother, now gone, brings tears to my eyes every year at this time. Beautiful story.

It’s so odd to look back 100 years and see all the suffering that people endured from diseases that we don’t even bat an eyelash at anymore. Cancer will be like that, too. And you did beautifully, explaining everything to your daughter. It’s important for kids to know that it’s okay to feel emotions, all emotions, even when you’re an adult.
